Reza Naqvi

Reza Naqvi (Naghavi) is a self-taught Pakistani artist. Born in Pakistan, he moved to United States in 1982 and currently living in New York. In 2008, an event was held in New York, to celebrate his poetry and paintings, where his art work was displayed. In early 1970s, he participated in an exhibition at Karachi Arts Council, where he was encouraged by his spiritual teacher(Eqbal Mehdi). He donated one of his painting to the exhibition for 'Helping The Children', which was sold for Rs. 5,000. His work was also displayed in Islamabad (Pakistan) and Washington D.C
He has been fascinated by the art of Painting and Calligraphy since he was a child, his first encounter with art was at the age of 4, when his mother hired a relative- Moqar Naqvi, (for a course, she was taking for her of teaching certification) to paint a portrait of Tipu Sultan and few scenes from the battle of 1857 A.D., against Britain colonialism. Reza learned to paint and draw by various teachers in Iranian Technical High School, and got a boost with the encouragement of his Technical Drawing teacher – Wali-ur-Rahman. As a family tradition, he was taught calligraphy from his uncle Sadiq Rizvi, before starting the formal schooling. He got, his fascination about sketches from his uncle-Zain-ul-Hasnain Rizvi, who use to do pencil drawings as a hobby. Because of the family constrain, he was not able to attend any formal arts school, but he started spending hours, watching painters making film posters near his house, and that was his art school.
Reza is a self-made, self-taught painter and calligrapher who, created realistic and mystic environment with his bold and uninhibited use of colors and lines He was impressed with the works of Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Iman Maleki, Leonardo da Vinci, Goya, Sadiqain and Eqbal Mehdi – specially, Eqbal Mehdi - who was the greatest realist painter of Pakistan, whom he considers his spiritual mentor. In his teens, he started to use his art as therapy, which kept him focused in his studies and out of depression.
